Chapter 19

Ezra propped himself against the wall watching Dex work with the boys while Justice was back in the Underground, checking in with Archer. Nyx was a few feet away, tucked in the corner, but she hadn’t made herself known and he hadn’t said anything yet.

Matt strolled in and Milo and Lucky all but disappeared behind Zain and Aren the moment she joined them. Both had bad experiences with those larger than them and Matt could be pretty intimidating.

Dex had finally coaxed Aren into a semisolid form and he was able to hold a meal bar in his hand. A relieved smile touched his face until Matt moved in to see. The second she was towering over them, he squeaked and the meal bar dropped. Matt caught it just before it hit the ground, bringing her closer. Aren jumped back when she lunged, passing right through Milo.

Milo yelped, going half invisible. Of all the young ones, he had the most control over his ability. It was almost instinctual for him to disappear when he was startled or scared. His biggest issue was working on releasing it when he wanted to. Not unlike Aren.

“Sorry,” Arens soft voice chimed. But Milo wasn’t mad, just startled, and a little creeped out.

Zain watched all the others using their abilities with envy. He frowned and tried to muster up anything inside him but nothing happened. He sighed.

“Why am I even here?”

Ezra winced at the dejection in his voice. Zain snagged a chair, snatching his hand back at the zap of static electricity that shocked him before he flopped down into it.

“That’s why. There may be more to those little shocks. If you can strengthen them, it may startle someone long enough to at least make an escape or cause a distraction,” Dex answered.

But Zain knew that wasn’t true. He’d been trying constantly to pull something more out of himself, putting as much power behind it as he could. He’d tried gathering up his energy for a longer time, like a charge. And every time, there was nothing but that little spark. He was not taking it well. After everything he’d been through, he’d hoped to at least come out the other side with some kind of edge.

The rest of them didn’t know, but Zain had been spending every spare minute trying to make something of those little sparks. It hadn’t done him any good. He’d watched the others start to control their abilities with a sharp jealousy.

Dex had noticed and tried to be extra encouraging, but when his ability never developed into anything, Zain had closed in on himself.

Matt plopped into a seat across from Zain.

“Don’t feel bad, bud. I don’t have an ability either.”

Zain’s eyes ran over Matt’s muscular arms and tall frame before meeting her eyes again.

“Yeah. That’s the same thing.”

The chair scraped against the concrete floor as he stood and fled the room. Dex rubbed at his ears and shared a look with Matt.

She grimaced. “Yeah, I think I kinda stepped in it there.
